Introduction

A registered Graduate Geologist is only eligible to apply to be registered as registered Professional Geologist after he/she has fulfilled the requirements of Section 20(2) of the Geologists Act 2008,i.e.,has obtained such practical experience as may be approved by the Board and has passed the examination as may be determined by the Board.

The examinations shall consist of:-

Part I – Professional practice; and

Part II – Competency

Part I cover topics on Geologists Act & Regulation, Etiquette & Professional Conduct, and Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA). The exam will be carried out via online platform. Candidates will be given 45 minutes to answer 40 questions.

Part II is a competency-based evaluation that comprise of:

  1. Understanding the complexities of geology and of geological processes in space and time in relation to the candidate’s speciality;
  2. Critical evaluation of geoscience information to generate predictive models;
  3. Competence in his/her area of expertise;
  4. Effective communication in writing and orally;
  5. Competency in the management of Health and Safety (H&S) and Environmental issues and other statutory obligations applicable to the discipline or area of work;
  6. Clear understanding of the meaning and needs of professionalism, including a clear understanding of the Code of Professional Conduct and commitment to its implementation; and
  7. Commitment to Continuing Professional Development throughout the candidate’s professional career.

The candidates must demonstrate that he/she has acquired and used the required specific skills, able to perform without supervision and able to direct others. Only those who has passed Part I that can sit for Part II.

Procedure for Application

Any registered Graduate Geologist applying to sit for the examination must submit:

  • Application for examination (Borang J)#link together with 
    • Proof of payment for the examination fee, RM200.00;
    • a copy of IC; and
    • resume/CV.

Examination results

The Registrar, shall notify the candidate of the examination result within fourteen days upon endorsement of the examination result by the Board.
