INTRODUCTION

A registered Professional Geologist is a person registered under section 20(3) of the Geologist Act 2008 [Act 689]. Only a citizen or a permanent resident of Malaysia may qualify for registration as a registered Professional Geologist as specified under section 20(4). According to section 23(1) and 27(1), a Professional Geologist who is registered with the Board may:

  • Practise, carry on business, or take up employment as a geologist.
  • Hold himself out as a geologist under any name, style, or title:
    • Bearing the words “professional geologist,” “geologist,” or their equivalent in any language.
    • Bearing any other word in any language that implies he is a professional geologist or geologist.
  • Be titled to describe himself as a “professional geologist” and use the abbreviation “P.Geol.” after his name or in association with his name.
  • Use or display any sign, board, card, or other device representing or implying that he is a professional geologist or geologist.
  • Be entitled to recover in any court any fee, charge, remuneration, or other consideration for geological services rendered.
  • Use the stamp as may be determined by the Board.
  • Prepare and submit geological reports or studies to any person or authority in Malaysia, relating to geological services in the fields of geology specified in the Second Schedule of the Act.

PROCEDURE FOR REGISTRATION

To become a registered Professional Geologist, one must:

  • Hold the qualifications approved by the Board.
  • Be a Registered Graduate Geologist.
  • Obtain practical experience approved by the Board.
  • Pass the examination determined by the Board.
  • Apply to the Board using application form Borang B along with:
  • Proof of payment for the processing fee (RM50.00).
  • Certified copies of supporting documents as listed in Borang B.

Only complete applications with all supporting documentation will be processed and submitted to the Board for approval. Every application for registration shall be decided upon by the Board within ninety days from the date of receipt of such application.
